Lessons Learned Today

This week, we’ve been busy preparing and decorating the lobby for Dontrey Srok Srea. The best part has been the students stepping up to offer their full support, asking how they can help. It truly means a lot to me.

  • One student stood out today—not because she’s a top performer academically, but because she’s brave, friendly, and determined. Despite not doing well in the mock exams and not being an outstanding student, she climbed the stairs to hang the paper birds in the lobby. Not many female students would volunteer for this, but she did. To me, this defines how much women are capable of—they can do anything men can do. As I always say, “Just because you’re not good at studying doesn’t mean you’re not good at everything.”
  • Oudom and I worked on the decoration, using a rope to spell out the title Dontrey Srok Srea. However, the rope we had left over from previous projects wasn’t long enough to fit the frame. So, we decided to go out and buy more. With no clear idea of where to find it, we started our search at 310 Street, where we were told we might find what we needed, but came up empty-handed. We then tried Mao Sengtong, Toul Tompong, and several other places—almost half the city—without luck. Just as we were about to give up, we found a store on Russia Hospital Street that had exactly what we needed. On the way back, I noticed a house selling bamboo, something I had spent the entire morning searching for online, without success. Yet there it was, right in front of me. What do you call that? I call it, “Things happen for a reason.” If we had given up on finding the rope, we would never have stumbled upon the bamboo.
  • Listen more and be humble.
  • Don’t take things too personally.
